Adolescence is a complicated time for both parents and teens and sometimes it can feel like an uphill battle. Though you and your teen may get discouraged at times, it is important to continue working on your relationship and communication. How you develop your relationship may look differently for each child you have, since we all have different personalities and needs.

*Even though your teen may tell you to just leave them alone, they still need your guidance and support. Provide it as much as you can and try not to take their need to separate personally

*Try to give your undivided attention when they are talking about something that is important to them

*Try to remember what was important to you when you were a teen, it will help you understand their frame of mind

*Encourage expression of their ideas and feelings, without passing judgment

*Set a good example for the behavior you expect

Examples: Owning your mistakes, listening when someone is talking, taking responsibility, modeling healthy stress relief

*Provide daily praise and encouragement

Examples:  "I appreciate your help with..."

"You've been working so hard at..."

*Take an interest in your teen's activities and friends

*Ask for their opinion, it tells them that you value their input
